Job description

Louise is an Associate Director and heads the UK Data Service functional areas of Collections Development and Producer Relations. The Collections Development team work to ensure that the most useful data are acquired and made available via the Service, using robust appraisal criteria. The Producer Relations arm works with data producers to ensure that high quality data are created, ensuring that, for example, ESRC grant applicants and award holders gain good advice on creating shareable data and share their data in a timely manner. Louise directs qualitative data activities at the UK Data Service and coordinates the international DDI working group on metadata standards for qualitative data. She is PI on a UK - South Africa Centre partnership project which is working with DataFirst at Cape Town University to look at enabling large scale data infrastructure for policy and planning, using household energy data as a use case.

Research interests

Louise had been PI on a number of research awards relating to data support and management and data sharing, supported by the ESRC and Jisc. Having been involved with qualitative data archiving since 1994, she regularly acts as consultant for new qualitative data archives around the world and coordinates the international DDI Working Group on Qualitative Data.

Her current research activities are focused around standards and technologies for ingesting, archiving and presenting digital social science data, particularly using open source infrastructures and tools.

Before joining the Archive in 2000, Louise was Deputy Director of Qualidata, the world first national qualitative data archive, from 1994. She has taught sociology, social research methods and statistics, and spent six years working on the design, implementation and analysis of the British Household Panel Study at Essex. She has published and edited journals and chapters on a wide range of issues relating to the archiving, sharing and reuse of data, and on infrastructures for sharing qualitative data.
