About the data

This study explored the trends, motivations, mobility patterns, identity and way of life of British migrant communities in the Costa del Sol.  The objectives of this study were, through the use of surveys, case studies and in-depth interview, to explore the extent of social integration of European (especially British) migrants in Spain and gain an understanding of the role of town councils in aiding or impeding integration.

How the data were used

This data collection was used to support Jo Haynes in her teaching of graduate qualitative research methods, and particularly, focusing on developing skills in data analysis. Using this data, along with other studies from the UK Data Archive, Jo asked her students to ask new or related questions about the topic area. In doing this they were asked to critically evaluate the design, execution and conclusions of the original study, and to practice developing their own new rationales for reinterpreting data.

In this study the original questions addressed trends, motivations, and identity of British migrants to the Costa del Sol, finding a lack of integration of migrants with the local Spanish community.  A student project reanalysed these data by exploring the reproduction of class differences, looking at how migrants constructed and reconstructed class in their new communities by distinguishing themselves not only from tourists, but from other expatriate Britons as well.
