The Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) were funded to compile this teaching dataset by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC).

The National Institute of Aging, the Department of Health, the Department for Work and Pensions, the Office for National Statistics, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Department for Transport, the Department for Education and Skills, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and HM Treasury funded the main English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, from which this dataset has been compiled.

The principal investigators for the main English Longitudinal Study of Ageing were M. Marmot, J. Banks, R. Blundell, B. Erens, C. Lessof and J. Nazroo.

Abstract:

The ELSA teaching data file contains information obtained from individual interviews and self-completion questionnaires from all 12,100 ELSA participants.

The file contains less than a tenth of the number of variables available on the main ELSA file and is designed for use as a teaching aid and also as a sampler for new and potential users of the main data.

Variable names are the same as those on the original ELSA dataset, held under SN 5050.

Main Topics:

The individual interview comprised the following twelve modules:

  • household demographics (variables prefixed DH);

  • individual demographics (DI);

  • health (HE);

  • social participation (SP);

  • work and pensions (WP);

  • income and assets (IA);

  • housing (HO);

  • cognitive function (CF);

  • expectations (EX);

  • psycho-social health (PS);

  • final questions (FQ);

  • self-completion (SC).

  • The teaching dataset contains selected variables from each of these modules, with the exception of household demographics. In total there are 408 variables in the dataset.

    Please note that the teaching dataset does not include Wave 0 (Health Survey for England) data; nor does the data file contain a unique identifier that would allow the file to be merged with other ELSA files.

    Standard Measures
    General Health Questionnaire (12-item):
    Goldberg, D.P. Manual of the General Health Questionnaire, Windsor:NFER-Nelson, 1978.

    CASP-19:
    Hyde, M., et al. (2003) 'A measure of quality of life in early old age: the theory, development and properties of a needs satisfaction model [CASP-19]', Ageing and Mental Health, 7, pp.186-194.

    Coverage:

    Time Period Covered: Most of the data refers to the time period when the interview took place. Some of the questions however did ask about past events (e.g. pension history, the participant's father's job when he/she was 14 years old).
    Dates of Fieldwork: March 2002-March 2003.
    Country: England
    Spatial Units: At present the ELSA team are not depositing any variables which will allow analysis by or on spatial units. However, they are developing a system by which these data could be provided to researchers who want to use it. Various methods of providing access to these data are currently being considered, including specialised datasets and data enclaves. In order to obtain access to these data, researchers will need to provide details of the analysis they wish to do and sign an agreement stating that they would use the data appropriately.
    Observation Units: Individuals
    Kind of Data: Numeric data; Individual (micro) level

    Universe Sampled:

    Location of Units of Observation: National
    Population: The ELSA sample was selected from three survey years of the HSE (1998, 1999 and 2001). Households were included in ELSA if they contained at least one adult of 50 years or older in the household who had agreed to be re-contacted at some time in the future. Wave 1 of ELSA was conducted between March 2002 and March 2003.

    Methodology:

    Time Dimensions: Longitudinal/panel/cohort
    Wave 0 (HSE - baseline) has not yet been deposited. The current deposit comprises Wave 1. Data collection is currently in progress for Wave 2, and Waves 3 and 4 are in development.
    Sampling Procedures: Multi-stage stratified random sample
    Number of Units: Target: 18813 (17768 core sample members and 1045 younger partners). Obtained: 12100 (11392 core sample members, 72 new partners and 636 younger partners). Weighted: 11392 (core sample members only).
    Method of Data Collection: Face-to-face interview; Self-completion
    Data Sources: The ELSA sample was selected from three survey years of the HSE: 1998 (held at the UK Data Archive under SN 4150), 1999 (SN 4365) and 2001 (SN 4628). Some HSE variables are included in the ELSA dataset.
    Weighting: Weighting used. See documentation for details.
