Abstract:
Taking Part is a continuous national survey of those living in a representative cross-section of private households in England. The survey was launched in mid-July 2005, and is conducted on an annual basis with adults (those aged 16 or over). (Survey data for children aged 11-15, interviewed at selected households since January 2006, are not available through the UKDA, but statistical releases and survey outputs can be found at the DCMS Taking Part Survey web pages.)

The survey is commissioned by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) in partnership with its non-departmental public bodies (Sport England, Arts Council England, English Heritage, and Museums, Libraries and Archives Council).

The aim of the survey is to improve the current knowledge base of engagement and non-engagement in culture, leisure and sport by gathering quality-assured data on participation, attendance, attitudes and related factors across the many sectors covered by the DCMS, for example, arts, sports, museums, broadcasting, gambling and volunteering.

To collect the data, the Taking Part survey uses face-to-face computer assisted personal interviews, which take approximately 45 minutes, on average, to complete. The samples for this survey are randomly selected from the small-users postcode address file and only those from private households in England are included. No geographical restrictions are placed on the location of the engagement, although the engagement must have been for the purpose of recreation or leisure, including voluntary work. Taking Part excludes engagement in sectors where the prime motivation was paid work or academic study. The exceptions to this are attendance at historic environment sites for the purpose of academic study, and sports opportunities other than refereeing, officiating and coaching.
Main Topics:
Main topics covered by the survey include: the arts, museums and galleries, libraries, archives, heritage, sport, social capital, engagement in various sectors whilst growing up, volunteering, broadcasting, gambling, and demographics.
Additional topics covered in the 2005-2006 survey include: the 2012 Olympics, and the 2005 licensing laws.

In order to preserve confidentiality, variables relating to census output area, postcode sector, local authority, and primary sampling units have been removed from the UKDA version.
