How to set up and run a data service: the challenges of social science data11 - 12 November 2010UK Data Archive, University of EssexOn 11-12 November 2010 the UK Data Archive will be hosting a workshop entitled: How to set up and run a data service: the challenges of social science data. The workshop will address issues in storing and sharing social science data, including microdata, aggregate, qualitative and historical data.

Participants will learn about the strategies and practices used by the UK Data Archive in our daily work. The Archive has over 40 years of experience in the areas of selecting, ingesting, curating and providing access to data. We are a designated Place of Deposit for The National Archives and are internationally acknowledged experts in this field. The surgeries will enable participants to engage with Archive experts on an informal basis, to pursue their own lines of enquiry and to look behind the scenes at some of our specialised activities.Prerequisites
In order to participate fully, participants should be actively working with storing and sharing social science data, or plan to in the near future. This course is unlikely to be suitable for undergraduate or postgraduate students unless working in a data archiving environment.Certification
A certificate of attendance will be issued on completion of the workshop.Cost
The cost of the workshop is £100 and includes all workshop materials, coffee, lunch, and drinks reception on day one and coffee on day two. It is non-refundable unless advance notice of seven days is given.Sponsorship
The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) will be supporting three fully funded scholarships to attend this workshop. Sponsorship applications are welcomed from DPC members and associates. The scholarship covers tuition fees, course materials, access to online resources, lunch and refreshments. Successful scholarship applicants will be asked to help promote the course and the work of the coalition.
The deadline for sponsorship applications is 15 October 2010.

To attend this workshop, fill in the online application form. The Archive will evaluate each application. You should hear from us within five working days whether or not your application has been successful. Please note that places are limited.
Do not forget to state which two surgeries you are interested in attending on day two of the workshop. If you are particularly interested in surgery topics which are not included in the programme, please let us know what you are interested in, and we will see whether a session can be included.
