Looking after your research data: managing and storing data for research projects 24-Jan-13University of Essex, Colchester

How much do you know about looking after your research data?

How confident are you that you know how to manage, organise and store your project's research data – numeric and multi-media - properly? How much do you know about keeping data safe, by backing up and encrypting data, quality and version controlling them, so that you or any colleagues on the same project know where to find the data at any time, and can easily understand them anytime in the future?

This half-day workshop (from 10.00 - 13.00) will guide you through the basics of how to manage and store data well and how to plan and implement good data management within research projects. It will cover legal aspects, quality control of data, describing data, data formats, storage and security matters. Our course aims to ensure that you are confident you won’t finish your research project with your data lost, in a mess, or at risk.

This session will help you:

  • use techniques for describing and quality controlling data
  • be aware of tools you can use to version control and back-up data
  • apply good practices in storing and transferring data
  • be able to use everyday tools for encrypting data
  • gain a deeper understating of the legal and ethical issues surrounding research data, such as Duty of Confidentiality, Data Protection and Copyright as they relate to research data
  • assign roles and responsibilities for the management of research data
  • be confident in passing this information onto your research students

This is a closed event for academic and research staff and students at the University of Essex. The workshop forms part of the University of Essex Learning and Development programme.
