Looking after your research data: professionalising your practices 05-Dec-12University of Essex

There is a deficit in the training of early career researchers in the areas of handling and management of the research data they produce.

While many Ph.D. students acquire the skills to collect and analyse data, the skills required to enable longer-term reuse of those data rarely feature in training, and are often only learned later on in the job when working on large and well co-ordinated research projects.

We believe that getting these professional data skills early on will prepare Ph.D. students well for research careers.

This workshop is offered as part of the Proficio programme at the University of Essex. The workshop will enable participants to develop an awareness of the knowledge and skills in this area. Our two-hour session will include short presentations and interactive activities across the following areas:

  • why share data and the benefits of good data management
  • planning and the data lifecycle
  • transcription of audio data
  • security and storage – data breaches, transmitting and backing-up data

After attending this session you will:

  • have a greater understanding of what it means to manage and store research data
  • appreciate the professional skills required to look after research data properly
  • understand how roles and responsibilities can be assigned to projects to meet ethical and legal requirements
  • be empowered to tackle data management issues to your own research environment

Participants should also be prepared to include examples from their own research practices, such as issues encountered in their own Ph.D. work.

This event is open only to postgraduate students at the University of Essex.
