Vacancy for Data and Services Developer, UK Data Archive

The UK Data Archive is seeking a talented and enthusiastic person to join the Applications Development and Maintenance team within the Technical Services directorate.

This person will lead on designing, developing and testing components of products relating to new and novel forms of data for the UK Data Service.

The software production environment is predominantly Microsoft based, using Visual Studio, C# .Net, Web API and SQL Server technologies, but new infrastructure based on Apache Hadoop has recently been commissioned.

The UK Data Archive (located at the main campus in Colchester of the University of Essex) is curator of the UK’s largest collection of digital data in the social sciences and humanities. It is also a partner in delivering the UK Data Service, an online portal for social science data, documentation and guidance. The UK Data Archive also supports the ESRC’s Big Data Network. Both are vital resources for researchers, policymakers, teachers and students around the world.

This opportunity would suit an IT systems professional with NoSQL experience looking to broaden and consolidate their software development skills in an environment which encourages continuous personal development.

You

  • Have experience of designing and/or implementing components using multiple types of NoSQL databases
  • Have experience of designing and/or implementing components based on a Service-oriented Architecture
  • Can communicate effectively with technical and non-technical people alike
  • Have a good working knowledge of database development tools and techniques
  • Your responsibilities will include

  • Evaluating and recommending NoSQL tools and techniques
  • Designing, implementing, quality assurance and maintenance of components to generate, modify and store data in NoSQL databases (key-value, column family, document, graph)
  • Providing input to capability assessment and capacity planning activities regarding new and novel forms of data
  • Assisting with the design and implementation of tools and techniques to mitigate disclosure risk and prevent unauthorised access to sensitive data
  • Working with computing infrastructure both on premises and in the cloud and ensuring an appropriate distribution of NoSQL processing capability and data across the infrastructure
