Workshop: Working with longitudinal Scottish census data (with a focus on spatial data)27 October 2009University of Stirling

This half-day workshop will take place at the University of Stirling in the afternoon from 12.30 to 16.30. Participants will carry out exercises based on the Scottish Longitudinal Study, with a focus on spatial data.

This workshop is suitable for both academic and government audiences. Dissertation students are also welcome.

No particular pre-requisite skills are required, but a familiarity with SPSS or Stata would be helpful.

Details:

Introduction to the ESRC Census Programme - This is an introduction to the services offered by Census.ac.uk which includes access to census data for academics.

Hands-on session - In this session, particpants will have the opportunity to access a subset of the SLS data, and to do some exercises that will illustrate the usefulness of longitudinal census data.

Example project - The Effect of Neighbourhood Housing Tenure Mix on Labour Market Outcomes: A Longitudinal Perspective (by Maarten van Ham and David Manley). In this session, a recently completed SLS project with a longitudinal research design is presented, which analyses the influence of a neighbourhood-level characteristic (tenure mix) on an individual-level outcome (employment status). Also, the pros and cons of using the SLS for this type of study are discussed.

How to access the SLS - This session guides potential future users through the application procedure, so that they gain understanding of the timeline of an average project, the key factors to a successful application and the requirements for using the data and receiving outputs.
