Archiving and preserving data

Relu award holders are contractually required to make their research data available for archiving within three months of the end of their award. All datasets should be submitted to the UK Data Archive.

Relu data will be digitally archived at: Relu data will be clearly linked between the two data centres. In addition, discovery and access to data will be provided by the Relu knowledge portal.

Data are ideally prepared for archiving and deposited by the researchers involved in the research to avoid losing the knowledge of, and familiarity with, the data. Preparing data for archiving takes time and effort. It is strongly recommended that:

  • data managing and archiving is planned early on in a project
  • data management is carried out throughout a project
  • two to three weeks are costed into research projects to prepare and collate materials for archiving at the end of research

Why share and archive data?

Data are a valuable resource. When managed and preserved properly, they can be used and re-used for future scientific and educational purposes. Sharing data facilitates research often beyond the scope of the original research, encourages scientific inquiry and debate, avoids duplicate data collection and provides resources for training. UK research councils increasingly follow guidance from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and require data resulting from research council funded research to be made available to the wider scientific community.

Attention needed

To facilitate effective data archiving at the end of a Relu project, particular attention needs to be paid to:
