UKDA StatServe
making statistics work for you
UKDA StatServe is a service provided by the UKDA for creating tailor-made
figures and tables from the wealth of data held within the Data Catalogue.
This service offers to produce statistics for those not in a position to analyse
the underlying data themselves. Statistics include frequency counts and
cross-tabulations using either single datasets or more complex timeseries.
As part of its service, the help desk can identify the most appropriate surveys
and variables to use from the UKDA Data Catalogue. Customers may also request
outputs from particular surveys that they have already identified themselves
from the Data Catalogue.
THE UKDA DATA COLLECTION
The collection comprises several thousand datasets from a variety of sources,
including academic researchers, government departments, intergovernmental
organisations, independent research institutes, and market research
organisations. Large-scale surveys carried out by governments for specific
policy purposes are particularly rich sources of data for further exploration.
Central government, and in particular the Office for National Statistics, is a
major and regular supplier of data series, including the General Household
Survey, the Labour Force Survey, and the Health Survey for England. Academic
research funded by the Economic and Social Research Council is also an
important source of social science-oriented research data – such as the British
Social Attitudes Survey, the British Election Studies, and the British
Household Panel Survey
CHARGES
Charges for this service start at £100. As a guide, a simple table using two or
three variables will typically cost £150. Contact the help desk for a quote.
All charges are subject to VAT.

EXAMPLE ONE
|
A retailer wishes to know the proportion of households with a dishwasher by
region. UKDA StatServe identified the appropriate dataset – the Family
Expenditure Survey, 2000-2001 – and conducted a tabulation of use of
dishwashers by standard government region.
The table opposite clearly shows a third of households in the South East have a
dishwasher compared to only one in seven in the North East.

EXAMPLE TWO
A journalist wants to look at the pattern of unemployment in the UK over three
decades. UKDA StatServe used the General Household Survey to conduct a profile
of economic activity by year from 1972 to 2004.
The line chart clearly shows that unemployment peaked in the early 1980s and in
the early 1990s. According to the line chart, unemployment was at its lowest in
1974.
