The UK Data Archive is guardian of the Humanities and Social Science Electronic Thesaurus (HASSET) and of its multi-lingual sister, the European Language Social Science Thesaurus (ELSST).
ELSST is currently available in 13 languages: Danish, Czech, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Romanian, Slovenian, Spanish, and Swedish, with a 14th, Dutch, to be released in 2019.
HASSET was developed by the UK Data Archive in the 1970s, and we have maintained it and used it since to index our data collections at study, question and variable level. The thesaurus allows retrieval of data and related documentation using hierarchies of keywords. It's been used by many data publishers to index their own holdings.
Some key facts:
- Between these two key thesauri, some 7,620 social science concepts and 4,160 synonyms are represented
- The thesauri both follow ISO 25964: Thesauri and interoperability with other vocabularies as far as possible
- in 2012 HASSET was converted to the Linked Open Data format, SKOS, using the Pubby tool
